Picture of the day is a picture chosen by Wikipedia. The picture is updated daily around 00:00 UTC.
Wallch, which is one of our open source projects, downloads and sets as your desktop background this picture. Unfortunately, the picture of the day, as an image file, can become very large (up to 50 MiB), which results to the following disadvantages:
- Very large file for download. It will eat up all your bandwidth.
- Very resource consuming. Setting such a large file as desktop background is a pain in the ass for your system. Especially if it uses special super-fancy transition effects, like Gnome does.
- Wikipedia's bandwidth. Of course we have to think about this. One user may not be a problem, but 100 users = 4.88 GiB for Wikipedia.
So, due to all these very important reasons, we decided to setup a script that downloads the file from Wikipedia once, and then it uploads it to Imgur, which is an image hoster. Wallch users are provided with the updated URLs through public dropbox links.
